The Burnet High School boys basketball team lost to Jarrell 45-43 Jan. 17 to go to 1-1 in District 24-4A play.
The Cougars (13-9, 1-1) had the final possession with seven seconds left, missed the attempt but got the offensive rebound for the game winner with a second remaining.
The outcome was the latest in positive results for Jarrell, Burnet head coach Roy Kiser said.
“Jarrell came out really hot, and it took us a quarter to get going,” he said.
As a result, the Cougars took a 17-7 lead after the opening stanza. The Bulldogs responded in the second quarter to score as many buckets as Jarrell though the Cougars led by 10 at the break.
The Bulldogs continued to chip away at the deficit in the third period and took their first lead with three minutes left in the contest. Their advantage eventually went to four before Jarrell caught up and won.
“After the first quarter it was solid,” the coach said of Burnet’s offense. “We were able to score some inside baskets and that opened up our guards to hit 3-pointers.”
Junior guard Andre Miller led Burnet with 12 points followed by junior guard Reese Syphrett with 11, and junior guard Baylor Dawes with 10.
Despite the outcome, Kiser said he saw plenty of positives.
“I was very proud of our kids for battling back in a tough environment after being down by double digits,” he said, “but it took a lot out of us, and we made some crucial mistakes down the stretch.”
He noted the Bulldogs’ defense game the team a chance at victory.
“After the first quarter, we settled in, and I was very pleased with our defense,” he said. “Our defensive post play was tough. Garner Krause blocked multiple shots and we limited their offense to only one shot on numerous occasions.”
Burnet welcomes Lago Vista Friday, Jan. 20, to The Doghouse. The junior varsity plays at 5 p.m., the freshmen at 6:15 p.m. and the varsity at 7:45 p.m.
